What to get with microphones?
I would say I'm a little new to the whole singing business, I am a guitarist but for singing and recording purposes I will need a mic.
1. I am going to need to be heard, so do I need an amp, preamp?
2. What type of microphone should I get that will work for recording as well as band practices

You should definitely get a usb microphone. They are inexpensive for the quality they have and you won't need an amp or preamp for this. Also, you won't need to install drivers or anything unless they come with their software program. You just plug and play, it is highly recommended for Youtube podcasters and musicians. I suggest getting the Blue microphones. It is for recording and live chat.
To record electric guitars, however, you will need an amp. You can get a 1/8" to 1/4" adapter connection to plug in in the "line-in" port on your laptop or computer, and then connect the other end to the "headphones" port in your amp, and connect your electric guitar to your amp as you normally would.
If you are going to get a traditional condenser mic (the ones people on radio or studio use) then you will need a computer audio hardware like the Mbox to record to your computer. The microphones are very cheap but the hardware to record on your computer is the more pricey stuff and do require installing drivers and other software and it is mostly for people who have studied recording.
As for live sound, you can just get a condenser microphone and maybe a stand and just plug it in to your amp. A good amp should have a headphones port (for recording to your computer) as well as more than one port for the guitar and mic. Later, you should invest on a PA system which have the mixer and speakers for a more professional live show.
