Maple Ebony
I am looking into buying a new Jackson SL3MG guitar. Question about woods. Please help, need answers quick.?
They are both neck - thru body guitars. The difference is, one is mahogany body and neck with ebony finger board, and the other is rock maple with rosewood finger board. I play metal style music (Trivium, Killswitch Engage, Lamb of God, Metallica, etc.), and I want a guitar that gives a good metal style sound. Which of the two would give me more of what I want?
Mahogany is a much denser wood and is known to add a little sustain. However, those bands you are mentioning have a ton of distortion on them, and must of their notes don't sustain very long because its so fast. Go with the guitar that feels right for you. To get the sound of these bands you should consider aftermarket pickups, a good distortion pedal or amp with great distortion, and setting the EQ on your amp. Just keep in mind, that all these bands play their guitars with custom or aftermarket pickups, through their rack full of effects (reverb, compression, gate, delay, etc) into their amp (top of the line Marshall, Mesa Boogie, Line 6, etc) into a studio mic and then recorded to give you the sound that you hear. Although wood can make some difference in tone, you will find that your pickups, distortion and amp will make up 90% of the rest of the sound.
