electrolysis with nickel?
ok i have learnt that during electrolysis of an aqueous solution, which means there will be two cations, one hydrogen and one metal cation, that the least reactive one will gain electrons at the cathode.
i.e. if you electrolized copper (less reactive than hydrogen) sulphate, then you would end up with copper at the cathode.
but now i have a dilema. after looking round on the net, it see many electrolysis reactions involving nickel in an aqueous solution, yet, although nickel is more reactive than hydrogen, it plates out on the cathode. what is up with this?
Zinc, for example, which is much more reactive or electronegative than nickel or hydrogen is recovered commercially by electrodeposition onto Al cathodes from a solution of zinc sulphate in sulfuric acid. This happens because there is a "hydrogen overvoltage" at the cathode. Usually some H2 is also evolved at the cathode. Certain impurities in the electrolyte, especially Ge can reduce this overvoltage to such an extent that only H2 is produced at the cathode. Ge is an anti catalyst.
In the case of nickel the same thing happens. There is, just by the way, also an anode overvoltage which depends on the composition of the surface of the anode.
