How reliable are Ural motorcycles?
I love the retro styling of Ural motorcycles with sidecars, and I want to buy one someday - but how reliable are they? Are they prone to failures or other problems from poor craftsmanship, or are they quality motorcycles? Also, are parts and/or service for them expensive? I've got my hangups about Russian-manufactured stuff.
I own a 2006 Ural Gear Up. It has 18,000 kms on it and has been reliable. Here in Canada they sell with a 2 year unlimited km warranty. I did not need to use the warranty at all.
Prior to 2003 or so, they were known to have a number of mechanical issues due to poor Russian parts but in subsequent years almost everything except the frame and wheels have been outsourced to Japanese and European "big name" suppliers...
They do require a bit of home maintenance such as frequent fluid changes, valve adjustment, etc but working on them is dead easy or relatively cheap if you take it to a dealer or any decent bike mechanic.
Riders have driven them long miles across the continents. Google "The Timeless Ride" or many other ride reports by those who have used them to cover huge distances.
I have a Honda ST1300 bought a few months before and although I love both bikes, due to the fun factor, the Ural is generally my first choice other than when I need speed.
Plus my dog and my grandson love riding in the sidecar.
