What color shoul i paint my Fender Stratocaster?
I have a black Fender Stratocaster and i found a person who paints cars that would paint it for $5. What color should i get it painted?
Hi! Paint colors are as personal as hair color; everyone will have an opinion of what they feel is the best combination of neck (maple, rosewood, ebony, etc.), body (black, white, red, blue, etc., etc.), and pickguard (white, black, pearloid, tortoise shell, etc., etc., etc.!). If you wanted to avoid the original black color, why not choose a custom color; maybe there is a new too-cool car color, that would look incredible against a white pearl pickguard! A couple of things to keep in mind: first, once you repaint the guitar you have immediately devalued the instrument. Further, if you choose a non-Fender color, it may be difficult to sell in the future. Second, and more importantly, an automobile painter may not be schooled in the fine art of painting wood. The preparation (drying, sealing, priming, etc.), the type of paint (the wrong type can crack or flake, as the wood expands and contracts), and the method of curing (the paint can dry either too fast or too slow, and become either too brittle or too soft). I am not an expert in this area, but have been on the receiving end of a guitar prepped and painted by a well-meaning automotive painter. Unfortunately, the end result was crazing throughout the finish after a very short time. If you are determined to repaint this guitar, take it to a guitar shop that specializes in refinishing.
