Change Capo
How do you change the key with a capo on a guitar?
Is there a way to go to the key of G with a capo? what fret? I'd really rather not tune all my strings differently hahaha
thanks!!!!
It's incredibly easy to play in G without a capo and in standard tuning. The basic triads of G major are G Am Bm C D Em and F#°. All but 2 of those (Bm and F#°) are pretty basic open chords.
With that said, it's pretty easy to play in any key on the guitar, regardless of your tuning. That's one of the great things about guitar. Playing in Eb and F are two very different things for a piano player (F is a very annoying key for piano), but for a guitarist it's nothing special.
Capos allow you to utilize open chords in keys that otherwise wouldn't use any... like Ab. Put a capo on the 1st fret and use all the chord shapes you used to play in G and BAM! You're in Ab. Put it on the 4th fret and use the open Am, Dm, and E shapes... POOF! You're in C# minor!
If you want a different sort of flavor for your song in G, put the capo on the 3rd fret and use the same shapes you'd use for E major. Of course, all of these shapes could be done as barre chords, so unless you've got some fancy voicings that require the capo, there's not much of a reason for it.
