when playing single notes on a guitar, how do i transition without a pause? i can play 6 notes on the first two strings....when i try and switch frets, how can i connect the notes?

Like the others have said, it takes practice.

A problem that many beginning guitarists have is that they have to think about one hand a time, which is not a good way to do things.
Practice enough so you can strum without constantly watching your right hand, try up and down strokes slowly.
When you feel like you have gotten the hang of strumming a bit better, try this:

Put your index finger on the second fret; strum down. Keep your index finger where it is, and use your middle finger to push down the third fret; strum up. Practice going back and forth with this until you get it down.

Keep in mind, you dont have to wait for your left hand to move before you move your right hand (I'm assuming you play right handed). Try to coordinate the motions so your right hand strums the note at about the same moment you press down on the fret.
It always helps to think ahead too, so you know where you're going next, but dont confuse yourself. Remember: start out very slowly, until you understand the general technique. You can pick up the tempo once you get used to it.
